Cameron Douglas’ Girlfriend Arrested Smuggling Him Drugs

Cameron Douglas, the son of actor Michael Douglas, apparently has a drug problem. It’s so pronounced, in fact, that his girlfriend, Kelly Sott, was arrested as she attempted to smuggle drugs to him. Sott was caught by court-appointed security guards passing an electric toothbrush to the younger Douglas, where he was under house arrest in his apartment in Manhattan. Inside the toothbrush were small bags of a substance that appeared to be heroin, according to criminal complaints.

Douglas had been arrested in July after an undercover police officer was alleged to have discovered 8 ounces of crystal meth on Douglas. Now, officials are accusing Douglas of running a veritable drug empire, alleging that he is selling large amounts of methamphetamine, delivering between the coasts from New York to Los Angeles. It has been alleged that Douglas delivers drugs in person or, in some instances, via FedEx from a hotel room in California.

After further analysis, a lab confirmed that the substance in the electric toothbrush passed to Douglas was, in fact, heroin, though Sott claims that "she was not aware of the contents of the toothbrush that she delivered." Sott was staying at a relative’s apartment in Manhattan when Douglas called her to deliver some items to him. Investigators, however, also discovered drug paraphernalia in the hotel room that Sott also had reserved, in the same hotel as Douglas. Cameron Douglas, when not allegedly dealing drugs, also does some acting, including a part in the 2003 film "It Runs in the Family," which also starred his father Michael and his grandfather, Kirk.

Michael Douglas Pleads for Leniency in Son's Drug Sentencing

Michael Douglas wrote a 5-page letter to the judge who will decide exactly how long his son will be required to spend in a federal prison in New York. In the letter, Douglas noted that his son comes from a troubled - albeit highly privileged - background, which included a well-documented family history of alcohol and drug abuse. In addition to the family tendency toward excess and addiction, Douglas noted the pressures of being born into a family with two generations of Hollywood icons.

Douglas noted that his son did not have the benefits of a traditional family environment as he grew up and that his formative years were spent in the dysfunction of Michael Douglas' failed marriage to Diandra Douglas. It is believed that Cameron Douglas first fell victim to substance abuse when he was 13 years old and that he has never recovered. He has been in and out of rehab as a result of various court orders over the years, but has refused to seek help unless required by law.

The charges that Cameron Douglas admitted to include possession and distribution of methamphetamine and cocaine. He was dealing drugs to support himself after being cut off financially from his family. He has been in prison for 8 months awaiting sentencing for his crimes. Michael Douglas noted in the letter to the judge that he has enjoyed visiting with his son while in prison, as he is now sober for the first time in his adult life.
